  • The use or possession of drugs or alcohol will result in suspension from school and may involve the police.
  • Violence and harassment will not be tolerated and any student involved in such incidents will be subject to suspension.

USE OF PLANNER

Thomas Haney students who use their planners wisely have a great deal of success. Students are required to plan on a daily basis in consultation with their teacher advisor and must have planners with them at all times. Students should understand clearly that they will be permitted to work only in areas as planned and documented in the planner.

A good daily plan will include: the subject, the learning guide and where you will be working. Provide some detail about the actual tasks you will be doing and, if possible, include reminders for needed equipment such as: calculator, pencils and maps. You are reminded to be working in the area where teachers who teach the subject you are working on will be. Ask these teachers for assistance when needed.

LATENESS

Students arriving late to school are subject to consequences for tardiness unless the school receives a note or phone call from the parent or guardian. Notes and/or phone-ins should be delivered to the office staff or the TA on or before the student arrives to school.

All students are expected to attend every TA session unless previous arrangements have been made between the teacher advisor, student and parent. Students arriving late to school but before the end of TA are required to go directly to TA. Students arriving to school after the scheduled TA time must go directly to the main office to complete the procedures of signing in.

TRUANCY

Students attending Thomas Haney Secondary are encouraged to explore the vast opportunities available to succeed and enjoy a quality learning experience. It is the responsibility of each student to attend regularly, to be on time and to be on task.

Truancy is defined as being out of school without permission. It is clear that student's who do not utilize instructional time in succeeding at Thomas Haney. The consequences for truancy are designed to discourage the behavior of skipping while at the same time to provide additional, more structure time to complete learning guides.

Attendance is taken during Teacher Advisor time every morning and before dismissal at the end of the day. Once TA has been completed, students are expected to move to the learning environment as indicated in their planners. It is the student's responsibility to be in their chosen areas of study with all supplies needed to complete the tasks. Students are not to leave the school during instructional time unless the Administration and the student's parents are informed.

SIGN OUT

If you have to leave the school for any reason, you must sign out at the office. For medical or other appointments we would appreciate a note from your parent granting permission to leave as it saves on us having to phone your parent at home or work. If you go home at lunch and do not return in the afternoon, we would appreciate a phone call from your parent or a note upon your return to school.

STUDENT APPEARANCE

You are expected to be dressed appropriately for a business-like work environment. The following regulations pertain to clothing to be worn: Clothes and appearance must not present a hazard or distraction to yourself or to others. Clothing may not be overly revealing nor portray graphics or slogans that contain sex, race, illicit substance, cigarettes, alcohol or obscenities. Footwear must be worn at all times for your own health and safety. You are not to wear head gear in school. Jackets must be left in lockers. When an adult member of the staff advises a student that apparel is inappropriate, the following process will be followed:

  • immediate compliance (do what you are asked)
  • if the issue needs to be discussed further, the student can make a submission through vice-principal to an Ad hoc Committee of two students and a counselor. Their determination will be final. In the meantime, the student will cover up or remove offending clothing until a decision can be made.

SMOKING

Smoking is not permitted on any School District No. 42 property. Smoking on school property may result in suspension from school.

VISITORS

All visitors to Thomas Haney must report to the office and identify themselves. This allows a permission note to be granted to legitimate visitors. If you have friends at other schools who want to drop by to see you during the day, remind them they are not welcome. If you are going to meet a visitor at lunch, please arrange with the school's administration or meet them off the ground's.

PARKING

All cars must be registered with the high school office and parked in appropriate areas (the west parking lot or the main front lot). Unregistered or illegally parked vehicles may be towed at the owner's expense (this includes cars taking up more that one space). If you drive in an inappropriate manner you may forfeit your privilege to bring a car to school.

PERSONAL PROPERTY

You should not bring unnecessary items, valuables, or large amounts of money to school. The school cannot be responsible for theft. You are urged to safeguard your valuables by keeping them on your person or locked up. In P.E., take a lock and lock your items in a gym locker. Do not tell anyone the combination to your locker.

Cellular phones and electronic pagers are discouraged at school. In the event that a student needs to carry either a phone or pager, they should be set so as not to interfere with the operation of the school. Pagers should be set to vibrate and cell phones should be set so as not to "ring" at school. These devices are not to be used during instructional time. If these create a disturbance you may forfeit the right to have one. Students carrying these devices must register their use with the school administration by providing a letter from either parents/guardians.
